Project Description
During this project we will learn about social change makers, people that changed the world for good. We will be partnering with an organization. We will work with them to create and produce a project that will benefit them. Our group will also keep a weekly vlog to show our work through each week. Along with our project work, we will find a person that we find inspirational, and create a painting of them.
Our Project
For our project we worked with two local organizations that focus on animal conservation and habitat reintroduction in San Diego county. The first organization is the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. A local branch of the San Diego Zoo that focuses on conservation efforts for animals all around the world. They only have endangered or threatened species of animals and pride themselves on the vast amount of land set aside for their African inhabitants such as giraffes, lions, rhinos, and more. The other organization is the The San Dieguito River Valley Regional Open Space Park Joint Powers Authority. The park covers a geographical area that extends from the beaches of Del Mar to the Julian mountains and works extensively in those areas for habitat and local animal reintroduction all around the San Diego
Progress Reflections
Every few weeks we would make a vlog to share how our project had been progressing. In each vlog we discuss our difficulties in contacting organizations, our newest information, and future plans for our project.
Final Product
For our final product, we created a video of our adventure of learning how two organizations worked to conserve animals. We started with the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and then worked with the San Dieguito River Park. Our video shows two interviews, one with each organization and us asking questions about their conservation efforts and their experience working with that. There are also clips of us working through this process, and our steps along the way.
Reflection of Learning
Through our project we discovered several changemakers throughout history, and I think in the future the San Diego Zoo Safari Park could be classified as one. Without this organization many animals may already be extinct, and they have improved the status of multiple species already. During this project we learned a lot about the conservation efforts at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, including things like their process of growing native plants, how they naturally grow and feed the animals there, and that the entire park is used to support the animals there. Working with the San Dieguito River Park organization, we’ve learned how many efforts are going into enriching our native plant species, in order to bring more native animal activity back to the area. It was not easy gathering all of our information, and we learned through a contacting process that many organizations, they are very busy and require advanced notice to be reached. We enjoyed the freedom of this project and our ability to inform the community, meanwhile learning a bit more about these conservation efforts along the way.
